Gegen die lyrische Poesie bei den Deutschen. Da lese ich, daß gar Mörike der größte deutsche Lyriker sein soll! Ist es nicht ein Verbrechen dumm zu sein, wenn man hier also Goethe nicht als den größten empfindet oder empfinden will?— Aber was muß da nur in den Köpfen spuken, welcher Begriff von Lyrik! Ich sah mir darauf diesen Mörike wieder an und fand ihn, mit Ausnahme von 4—5 Sachen in der deutschen Volkslied-Manier, ganz schwach und undichterisch. Vor allem fehlt es ganz an Klarheit der Anschauung. Und was die Leute an ihm musikalisch nennen, ist auch nicht viel: und zeigt wie wenig die Leute von der Musik wissen: die mehr ist als so ein süßliches-weichliches Schwimm-schwimm und Kling-kling!— Gedanken nun hat er gar nicht: und ich halte nur noch Dichter aus, die unter anderm auch Gedanken haben, wie Pindar und Leopardi. Aber was kann auf die Dauer einem diese Knaben-Unbestimmtheit des Gefühls sein, wie sie im deutschen Volkslied sich ausdrückt! Da lobe ich mir selbst noch eher Horaz, ob der schon recht bestimmt ist und die Wörtchen und Gedänkchen wie Mosaik setzt.

Pläne aller Art:

1) der Cyclus von Collegien über griechisches Wesen.

2) Sammlung eines ungeheuren empirischen Materials der Menschenkenntniss. Dazu viele ältere Geschichtswerke, Romane usw. zu lesen, auch Briefe.

3) Dühring, als den Versuch einer Beseitigung Schopenhauer’s durchzustudiren und zu sehen, was ich an Schopenhauer habe, was nicht. Hinterdrein noch einmal Schopenhauer zu lesen.

4) allmähliche Fortsetzung meiner Unzeitgemässen Betrachtungen, zunächst “Richard Wagner in Bayreuth,” “die Philologen” “über Religion.”

5) meine philologischen Arbeiten ausführen, damit sie nicht ganz mir aus dem Gedächtniss kommen. Den ersten Band einer Sammlung philologischer Arbeiten herauszugeben, enthaltend: “die Choephoren des Aeschylus” “über Rhythmus” “Hesiods und Homer’s Wettkampf” “Diadoche der Philosophen.”

6) mit meinen Schülern Baumgartner und Brenner die Vorstudien zu einer Lehre vom Stil.

7) im Pädagogium: Plato Ilias Moduslehre Agamemnon des Aeschylus.

Goethe ist vor Allem ein Epiker, viel mehr als etwa Lyriker. Ganz falsch, in ihm den größten Lyriker zu sehen.

Aeschylus ist, wie alle Dichter, unreligiös.

Eins der schädlichsten Bücher ist der Don Quixote.

Es bedarf keineswegs des “schönen Wetters,” damit die Natur schön erscheine. Manche Natur bedarf sogar dazu des schlechten.

Against lyrical poetry among the Germans. I read that even Mörike is supposed to be the greatest German lyric poet! Is it not a crime to be stupid when one does not feel or does not want to feel Goethe as the greatest here?— But what must be going on in their heads, what concept of lyric poetry! I then looked at this Mörike again and found him, with the exception of 4—5 things in the German folk song manner, quite weak and unpoetic. Above all, there is a complete lack of clarity in perception.And what people call musical in him is also not much: and shows how little people know about music: which is more than such a sweet-soft swimming-swimming and ringing-ringing!— He has no thoughts at all: and I can only tolerate poets who, among other things, also have thoughts, like Pindar and Leopardi. But what can this boyish vagueness of feeling, as expressed in the German folk song, be to one in the long run! I would even prefer Horace myself, even though he is quite precise and sets the little words and thoughts like a mosaic.

Goethe is above all an epic poet, much more so than a lyric poet. Quite wrong to see him as the greatest lyric poet.

Aeschylus is, like all poets, irreligious.

One of the most harmful books is Don Quixote.

It by no means requires "good weather" for nature to appear beautiful. Some nature requires even bad weather for that.
